There is a compelling new argument to JJD having an apprentice. The idea of JJD having someone he was training never crossed my mind until I though about the reason he would engage such risky behavior. First of all having someone that was well versed in the MO of the East Area Rapist would allow JJD to continue his sexual fantasy life well after his body was not able to do so but more importantly it would allow him to set up a fall guy that would end the search for EAR. We know JJD was attempting to set up the weird guy that lived behind victim #6 and I believe he did that because this victim was being stocked very closely and JJD believed LE might be able to connect him without a fall guy.

I'm not sure about the apprentice, but if JJD had one as EAR, would you think the apprentice would have visited his Auburn house? If so, it's possible the teenage neighbors who JJD let hang around his garage as he was tinkering around, might have seen this person. Can't remember which show it was on, but there were interviews with as then-teenage brother and sister who lived across the street from JJD in Auburn on Granite Ln. If I remember, it was the sister who thinks JJD was the one who poisoned their family dog back then. I'd like to ask that pair, and any of the other kids they remember hanging out at JJD's garage, if they remember JJD working on cars that weren't his during that time (cars he could have used as the vehicle for his prowling and attacks as EAR.)

The apprentice m not have known who JJD really was because as we know JJD kept his life's separate. There was JJD the cop then there was EAR then there was JJD the family man etc.

If we think about just this part of JJD's "apprentice" motivation, couldn't we also simplify things and change "apprentice" to "patsy." I don't think JJD needed to have contact with any kind "partner" for this. He had police resources to scrounge for people criminal records (and military records?). Oscar Clifton was an easy patsy given the Tulare County Sheriff/DA corruption. Kenneth Lane, if innocent, was framed in the Page/Sinclair murders - for which he was acquitted three times. Also note Kenneth Lane lived in the EAR zone.

Wasn’t Arthur Prosser caught with a load of rape gear in his trunk? And we can’t forget ‘The EAR is trying to frame me’ Carlos. I am of the opinion that there were many.

A cop like JJD who is trained could with ease set up others for his crimes.

The ONS series is an example also of others being blamed for his work.

You are correct and I think there were even more cases of framing or setting up others for his crimes. I also believe JJD would have satisfied some of his sadistic feelings by framing others and causing pain to others. JJD was not one of the offenders that needed the attention for all of his crimes in fact he did not want the series linked together unlike for example BTK who wanted all the credit for his work. JJD wanted to cause more pain and add to his list of victims.

He wanted control, sex, and to be ‘Gone in the Dark.’

JJD did not need the credit and in fact in my opinion (of course) one of the many reasons he was so difficult to catch is as the different crimes were committed it appeared as if the offender was just starting out as opposed to the natural escalation and progression of other offenders. This made it appear as if there were there or four different offenders rather than just the one. VR had already killed but EAR appeared as if he was new to the crimes and was building to murder. There is nothing that JJD did that was not planned although things did not always go as planned none the less it was planned. JJD did a great job of making the early Rancho Cordova attacks appear to be a much younger offender who was learning when in fact he was a very good burglar from the VR series. LE including myself thought we were dealing with a young adult late teenager in 1976.

I am sure they share traits in common, particularly viewing themselves as more clever than others. Yet I can’t envision Deangelo a prolific letter writing fiend demanding to be published and spilling details about his crimes for the ‘frunt’ page.
