If anyone who is local has not walked the cement lined ditch behind and in the area of attack #9 you really should do it and at night. The ditch itself has not changed much from the 1970's the landscape in the surrounding homes backyards may have matured but its very much what it was like back then. The ditch is not even fenced off in parts and always an easy access by just walking into it. It is truly eerie and is still an avenue for crime so be careful to go earlier in the night to avoid the criminal element that occasionally uses the ditch along with teenagers and homeless individuals.
The one thing you will see is some homes have placed motion sensor lights facing the ditch that makes it even more creepy because as you walk past the light source and back into the darkness you are unable to see. The area where the exchange occurred between JJD and the victim does not appear to be intact the county sewer district frequently uses tractors to clear debris and has at some time removed the actual location. But it you keep in mind the house in the distance with its porch light on as it is described you will be able to find the general location. One last note the barking dogs are also a major factor even now as I remember it back in 1976 and was something of a common occurrence as JJD prowled the area.

This is why I’m confident he made a deliberate choice to make these drainage canals/ditches a part of the “script” during the infantile stages of the Sacramento EAR phase; related, we’ve seen this pattern of his desire to kidnap and remove victims from their homes—this was attempted as early as Visalia, and really, its genesis was in 71 when Bonnie caught his jack-o-lantern mug in her window. The shock value was of utmost importance, and I get the impression he wanted it to be as grandiose and Hollywood as possible.
That speaks to a stunted, immature, juvenile mind—forget that he was thirty-one (adult) at the time he did this; he’s seventy-four now, but that mental/emotional immaturity is still there.
As I recall, #9 passed on from this world way too soon—do not underestimate joey’s role in that outcome. I wish “dbw” would come back and fill in the gaps on #9–those of you who were on PB in the old days will remember “dbw.”

It seems as though the girl that he had abducted not being the girl that he intended to abduct upset some plan of his. I wonder what his plan was.

I'm not going back there at night! It's doubtful that I'd even go back there during the day. If you want to go with.......... Nick, I know what you're saying and I agree that it hasn't changed much because that area was already built up when the attacks occurred. To be honest, I've avoided going to any of the crime scenes.

Even looking at some of the crime scene pics...there's an eeriness that hangs around. JJD's evil presence.

I, of course, feel being at the crime scene is a benefit to understanding the offender and it also helps me to in a way (as much as I can) to see it from the victim's point of view.

You can traipse that path in the grungy canal if’n you choose. Just remember to pack a big-bore sixgun or a 1911 (Gov’t Model). It’s not the four-legged critters that are the problem—it’s the two-legged predators for whom you must always watch. 😉💣💣 mf73

I used to ride my bike through some of those cement canals as a kid. I would often run across teenagers smoking weed and drinking.

In the summer this particular one is mostly dry and is not too bad to go into in the very earlier evening of course. I forget not everyone is armed and trips to these places might be a bad idea. I think I go video the area in the spring-summer at dusk so anyone who is curious can see what it is like without the danger level.
I am retired LE and have always been called to crime scenes and don't really think about where I am going. I think for that reason I feel the need to visit crime scenes of EAR/ONS. The similarities in attack zones and victim's house placement become so much clearer to me when I am there in person. I wanted to get into what JJD saw and felt and after awhile there does seem to be connections with locations other than the very obvious.

Looking at your thumbnail reminded me of this incident I had with the Sunrise Mall Police... I remember when Sunrise Mall had their own Police force and they were in fact sworn Police Officers. Some were moonlighting or what we now call extra duty assignments from Sac Sheriff and Sac PD but they wore Sunrise Mall Police uniforms and marked patrol cars. They also had full time Officers. I was pulled over by one and was given a history and current lesson by the Officer at the time. He explained to me how they are Police and even showed me his ticket book in case I had any doubts. I did escape without a ticket and he turned out to be a pretty good guy.

There was a comic book shop there called Comics & Comix and that was a second home to me.

I think that the most remarkable thing about the EAR, besides the fact that he enjoyed frightening and harming people — of course, is that he was able to be so familiar with so many areas. It’s like he had spent his childhood exploring all of them. When he was arrested he had a dirt bike and I suspect that he was at it. I think he was prowling and peeping for more than sixty years. WEARD.
