I, of course, feel being at the crime scene is a benefit to understanding the offender and it also helps me to in a way (as much as I can) to see it from the victim's point of view. I agree. I think that the most remarkable thing about the EAR, besides the fact that he enjoyed frightening and harming people — of course, is that he was able to be so familiar with so many areas. It’s like he had spent his childhood exploring all of them. When he was arrested he had a dirt bike and I suspect that he was at it. I think he was prowling and peeping for more than sixty years. WEARD. I wonder if he had a paper route. I had a paper route delivering the Daily Review and Oakland Tribune, I had the morning route and the pm route; back in the 70’s and 80’s there were evening additions. We knew the neighborhoods and all the alleys and shortcuts.

I believe the Rancho area he knew well as a kid since they lived over there and the only thing that would have changed would be the newer build homes in the Paseo area.
I believe the Carmicheal area and where attack #9 happened he learned through prowling in both and night and I am certain he used maps. I think the map would have been what brought his attention to this area due to the very similar design elements with cement-lined ditches and even the home construction was very similar to the Rancho area. I also believe JJD knew there was a separation of patrol duties and responsibilities within the Sac Sheriff's Downtown being the location Patrol and Investigations worked out of and North Patrol for the Carmicheal and surrounding areas including Orangevale. AS LE JJD would know this would help him in the same way that attacking in different LE agencies jurisdictions helped him to avoid capture.
JJD was by no means a stupid impulsive criminal in almost all of his activities. There were some things I would call implusive.

There were times where JJD had been seen and even chased and he stayed in the area and actually committed an attack that was most distinctly his sexual compulsive in overdrive affecting his judgment.

Its also a shame LE was not able to catch him when his guard was down in those times.

The Thomas Guide was the one here and even now (LE still uses them, since in emergencies tech fails) it was very detailed. I would also not find it hard to believe JJD brought actual maps of areas at gas stations in his new target zone. IN those days we all had to buy maps at gas stations and look up streets and places we wanted to go. JJD would never had stood out buying maps we all did that.

Or maybe he had a AAA membership, get those maps for “free” Heck yeah he could have done just that. JJD was arrogant and might have even had AAA plan his trip for him that was common in those days. JJD would of course select a tourist destination to avoid suspicion.

I would LOVE to see his AAA file! Or which ever his insurance carrier was. Claims? Great reading material! More jjd files!

When his family lived in Rancho he could have had a paper route with the Sac Bee or with one of the 2 local papers that came out once a week. The Grapevine and the Green sheet were the 2 weekly papers back then in Rancho this would have been in the 1960s.
I think some neighborhoods are easier to understand why he knew them well while others leave nothing more than he learned them as he prowled. The Rancho Cat area is explained by his family living there years before and this could also apply to EAR series start which is East Sac portion of Sac County. JJD knew those streets best and provided he was able to move through that area without being caught by Sheriffs. After the LE push and media attention, JJD was forced to move to less than desirable locations that required him to learn a new area. Even though he still was able to learn escape routes and still preplan his attacks.
