Having read thru a number of newspaper crime reports I find this to be the most interesting.
July 1966 we know the Canberra is in California, JJD's family lived in Auburn. On July 1st 1966 a rapist strikes in North Sacramento and later the same date another woman was attacked in Auburn. Look at how similar to the two accounts are! Early EAR?

The Auburn crime seems to fall under the "kidnapping with intent to commit robbery" - with no statute of limitations - since she was moved into the bathroom and a pistol was stolen. How no one in California LE ever realized that, apparently, is a head scratcher. The rape kits would have been supporting, but strongly convincing evidence to help convict the kidnapper/robber (not making light of the rape, but, legally speaking, that's how it would have been - had anyone realized the crime had no SoL long before 2018.)
Note the Placer County (Auburn) official said it was the "tenth similar crime since Jan. 1", and the Canberra was gone between Feb. and June. So JJD could have been involved in some (all?) of the earlier of the ten.
I wonder if the authorities of Placer County and Sacramento County were aware that both crimes occurred on that July '66 date (and that they were MO-related.)
Of course, we'll probably never know, since records have been destroyed before the age of computers.
Side note: of the 13 kidnapping-to-commit-robbery cases Deangelo is being tried for, only one of them doesn't involve a couple. That attack was the one where the woman was doing laundry at her parents and her car was stolen - the stolen car may be the reason it was chosen. I'm guessing the two-words-against-one is part of the reason the other 12, with couples, were chosen.
EDIT: according to goldenstatekillertrial.com, all 13 allege a firearm as a control weapon - which may be the strongest reason of all. Huge MO point to connect Maggiore and Snelling murders.

JohnnyHands, You make some excellent points but I believe the kidnapping charge only applies to cases where the victim was moved from one room to another room or particularly when the victim was taken out of the home. As far as the dated records, I've never checked with Placer County Sheriffs to see if they may still have records dating from the 1960s. Placer County had a GREAT Sheriff for MANY years who just retired and knowing how he felt about things, I'm wondering if they may still have records that old. Maybe I should check to see what they have and what they don't have.

Thanks, Jenn, but I'm assuming she was in her bedroom or some other room, and she was moved to the bathroom - and a gun was stolen. I'm also thinking the the GSK EAR crimes were from the bedroom to the family room or living room - so there doesn't seem to be much difference. Note, in the two articles murderinc posted, only the Auburn crime specifically mentions being locked in the bathroom (assuming a move), that's why I mentioned only that one as "kidnapped-to-commit-robbery." That said, if she was already in the bathroom when she was tied to a pipe, then we don't have a kidnap (I guess.)

Regarding all sexual assault and kidnapping charges that occurred in Placer County (old and new,) Placer County DA told me they would need two things in order to move forward with prosecution. 1. The victim would have to agree to move forward and 2. there would have to be sufficient evidence for prosecution like DNA or strong MO. The victims described in these two articles would be either too old or deceased. That said, it's still worth reviewing all of these incidents where time, place and MO fits.

Agreed, highly unlikely to ever be prosecuted - any of them.

The even more disturbing part is the end of the Auburn newspaper article claiming this was the 10th similar rape case reported since the start of that year. Clearly a serial rapist in and around the Placer Sheriff's and Auburn PD jurisdiction and with Rocklin right down the road ... you see how many more do we have going on?

Clara Anderson was murdered in her home in Walnut Creek just 900 feet from the two EAR attacks two months after this in Sept 1966. IMHO, it really shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who murdered her
