A located a newspaper article from the Nyack Y Journal Thursday, May 19, 1977, about the EAR case where Bill Miller the Sheriff's stated on Wednesday night the Sheriff's Department received 2500 more calls through the switchboard with over 2000 calls from the public with information about the rapes and more calls regarding prowlers. This is an example of how afraid the public was and just how many calls with tips on EAR really came in on a daily basis.
This was an AP storyline that made it all the way to New York and this was in May'77 relatively early in the series.

Just for kicks I also saw the TV line up for May, 19,1977 and it included "Welcome Back Kotter", "Street of San Francisco", "Barney Miller" and "The Waltons".

Sac Sheriff's were so convinced EAR was using the American River Bike Trail in the Rancho and Carmicheal they even used burrow "game Cameras" from the Forestry Department. There were never any images captured that showed EAR was using the river as far as I am aware. There was so much effort put on the American River it left open the more likely way EAR fled since he was never stopped or identified. I do believe the river was concentrated on until the later attacks in Sacramento where they switched to Highway 50 on the belief EAR was using the freeway since the river was a bust. JJD used his police training to aid him when it came to fleeing after an attack.
