Nick, did Greg tell you when the last time Greg saw Joe? Also, since you only mention Mills Jr. High school did they stop being that close of friends in high school - and did both of these incidents happen for sure, when they were both in junior high school? These stories, if 9th grade or before make JJD sound like he could have been experienced criminal by that time (we know he was a prolific burglar by 10th or 11th grade if you believe teenage friend "Gary S"/Jim from the "Man In The Window" podcast.) JJD would have been just starting 9th grade, almost 15 years old, in 1960 when the Floyd (Coggin?, Coggins?) murder that happened in Sept. or Oct. of 1960 (Murder Inc. had a page on her site about it, but I can't find it now.) It was a murder where a teen age girl heard or saw someone outside her window, and a visitor of her mother was there, Floyd, who went out to investigate in the large, dark orchard field and was shot dead. The police never had any suspects, but among their three or four theories of the perp was that a teenager did it. The house was something like five miles away from JJD's Rancho Cordova house. Thinking about a young, prowling JJD, it's not out of the question he could have used his bicycle to go to neighborhoods some miles away from Rancho Cordova, because he knew no one knew him in those neighborhoods as they might in Rancho Cordova. I'd like to know if Greg remembers JJD having driven a car by the time Greg drove his parents car? (you'd think JJD and him would have discussed it). If he'd driven one before Greg did that evening, it's possible he could have "borrowed" one before. Also, does Greg remember how tall he was at the time (more, specifically if JDD was taller, shorter or the same size than Greg?) If JJD was a short kid who shot up at, say, age 16, then it's less likely he'd get away with driving a car at a younger age. But it he was say, 5'6"-5'7" by the time he was almost 15, then he'd look less suspicious driving. I'll try to answer your questions in order. Greg did not remember a particular time as the last time he saw Joe. Greg and Joe appear o be casual friends that ran into each other more than being friends who saw each other everyday. I don't have any details on the 1960 murder maybe we could ask Murder Inc to post it here. Greg did remember a time period when Joe drove a car a story I will write up asap. I did ask Greg what Joe looked like during the time period he knew him but he did not recall details other than his haircut in what he called called a "pomp style" puffy bangs sort of. I need to send Greg a couple of pics to see what he means by puffy hair. I will also ask your height question as well.

so the next story that Greg shared is a claim that he asked Joe to come with him to a guy's house because he was owed money. Greg said he saw Joe on his way to a friend's house who owed him money and Joe agreed to come with him. Greg did not tell Joe he was going to collect money and Joe did not ask he simply came along for the ride. Greg was again driving his parent's car without a license or permission. The friend's house was off Ambassador Road. They arrived at the house and knocked on the door without getting an answer the friend's car was parked in front of the house so Greg believed the friend was home and did not want to answer the door because he did not want to pay the money owed to Greg. It was at this time Greg told Joe why they were there and Joe seemed very interested according to Greg. Joe then walked to the front door and began banging hard and loud on the front door of the house yelling I know you're in there come to the door. after a few minutes of constant banging on the door, Joe decided to go around the house and see if they could see the friend thru the windows in the back of the house. The backyard gate was locked so Joe shouldered into it and the gate smashed open making a very loud sound. Greg said he was getting nervous since this was the middle of the afternoon and they were now forcing their way into the backyard. Greg said Joe was set on going into the backyard and seemed "amped up". Joe entered the backyard and started walking around the house looking into the windows as he made his way to the back patio sliding door where he pulled on the door handle only to find it locked he called Greg to join him because Greg was still standing at the broken gate. Greg joined him and Joe asked which window was the friend's bedroom Greg did not know for sure so Joe banged on every window including the patio door he also pushed on the sliding windows to see in any of them were unlocked which they were not. Joe peered through the windows but they did not see anyone inside. They then walked to the front yard. Greg pointed to a car parked at the curb and told Joe that was the guy's car so joe walked over to the car peering inside the car. Greg then looked inside and saw there was an equalizer installed right below the car stereo and he decided he was going to take it in lew of the payment. The doors were locked on the car all but the wing window. Greg opened the wing window and tried stretching his arm as far inside the door as he could reach attempting to unlock the door but his arm was too short. Joe stepped up and said he would try and within seconds the door was open Greg sat down in the passenger seat of the car and yanked the equalizer from the mount and pulled harder to disconnect the wiring. He then stood up and closed the car door walking toward his parent's car. Joe joined him and they sat in the car together Greg looked at the equalizer he didn't want it so he asked Joe if he did Joe said sure I'll take it. They drove back over to their own neighborhood and parted ways Joe walked toward his house with the equalizer in hand. I asked Greg why an older kid would owe him money and he grinned and said it was a drug debt which I took for Marijuana since Greg had previously told me he sold weed some in his youth. I did ask him if Joe ever used or brought weed from him and he stated no Joe didn't do that sort of stuff as far as he knew. So Joe and Greg did an attempted residential burglary and then committed a vehicle burglary in broad daylight. It tells me Joe was comfortable with the behaviors. The street Ambassador is a regular neighborhood too so it shows Joe had the balls even then . Yes, he was comfortable with those behaviors, but, from the story of the original post, apparently didn't yet know about the coat hanger trick for breaking into a vehicle (but he learned it that evening from the neighbor - as a junior high schooler.)

Another couple of questions for Greg: 1) has he heard the Man In The Window episode 9, "The Many Faces of Joseph Deangelo?" 2) Does he remember a guy named Jim (last name withheld by the podcast) aka "Gary S" who was JJD's best friend in 1962 (their sophomore year in high school and possible later grades? Note, in the podcast, Jim said after high school he never saw JJD again.) If Greg hasn't heard that episode, here's the link, and the section with Jim/"Gary S"starts about 41:45 in the episode - with the Sac DA reading about the dog-killing incident "Gary S" remembered, during a burglary he and Deangelo committed. It also describes other burglaries they did together: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/man-in-the-window-the-golden-state-killer/id1465334342?i=1000502438392

I can tell you Greg is a strange guy and he seemed to me as if he was in a bad mood today when I spoke with him. I will give it a few days and see if he changes his mind. He also went on a rant about his life circumstances completely unrelated to this topic so I knew I was not gong to get anywhere with him today. I had to speak with him several times before he was willing to talk about JJD so it seems to be par for the course. I'll check back in with him in a few days and get back to you afterwards.

Greg did tell another interesting story that he claimed Joe told him. Greg said one night he ran into joe and they started to talk. Joe told Greg he had just been stopped by the cops just down the street. Joe stated he had taken four beers and had them in the sleeves of his jacket with two cans in each sleeve. AS Joe was walking down the sidewalk a Sheriff's car was passing by and as the cop passed him he must have seen the bulges in the sleeves of his jacket because the cop stopped and then backed up to Joe. The cop stepped out of the cop and asked joe what was inside of his jacket joe replied beer and the cop stepped towards him and told him to take them out. Joe said the cop then asked him where he lived and Joe told him a different place than his actual home. after Joe took the four beer cans out and placed them on the sidewalk at the cop's feet the cop told Joe to pour them out. Joe then said he didn't have an opener so the cop handed him a small pocket knife and said pour them out. Joe pushed the blade into the can tops piercing them and began pouring them down the gutter. After the cans were empty the cop told him to gather them up and throw them into a garbage can that was on the street (it must have been trash day). The cop then told Joe maybe he should take him home so his mother and father could deal with him. According to Greg Joe said he made up a story about being in so much trouble blah blah (those were Greg's exact words) and the cop took the bait (Joe's words according to Greg) and let him go without going to the family home. The two of them laughed about the cop being dumb or something along those lines. Greg said Joe seemed very pleased with himself for pulling this off and continued to recall more details and how great he was at lying to the cop. I asked Greg where the beers came from and he said Joe never said nor did he ask. So was this a home burglary ? or did Joe take them from his own home? I thought this was a very interesting story. What do you guys think?
