The afraid letter showed up at the Sacramento sheriff's Department in August of 1977. LE claimed it gave some insight to EAR and it was written by a male but could have also been a female author.
If you believe the letter was real then I believe it would have been written by Mrs. DeAngelo after she started to think about Joe's behaviors and constant absentees from the family's events. If we believe that then I would bet things got dicey in August for the DeAngelo household. Joe would really be watching his wife and even the other family members closely, everyone that was an adult anyway. It must have sent JJD into a panic because he left Sacramento County right after the two Sacramento newspapers published the article about the letter. The letter was never presented to the media and was lost by the Sheriff's Department. I have inside contacts and no one I know has even seen that letter even back in 1977.
I believe the letter idea was just that an idea that then Sheriff of Sacramento County approved a press release of a letter (but not the latter's contain) to force EAR out of the County. The letter worked because EAR moved on out of Sacramento rights after. This was a time when the Sacramento Sheriff himself never once spoke the words East Area Rapist instead Bill Miller had to do all things EAR. The Sheriff was very pissed off that EAR was getting away with it and he was not giving him any press from his mouth. The letter was perfect for driving EAR away and to LE in Sacramento that was the only goal because they had failed at catching him and had no real leads to JJD.

Could Sharon Marie Huddle have written that letter? Maybe, but she would never admit that there is too much liability for her now. If anyone could prove she knew JJD was EAR, it would further destroy her life financially. We will never know if the letter was real, let alone who authored it. I still do not understand why no one has filed a civil suit against her estate or at least got a deposition from her on what she knew when she knew it. I do not blame the DeAneglo children, but those adults in JJD's daily family life had to have known something. JJD would have shown signs, especially to someone who was educated and became an attorney who saw the craziness of divorce daily.
If Sharon Marie Huddle cooperated, LE might learn more about her husband's behaviors because he sure as hell is not going to talk.

Here’s a link to the goldenstatekiller.com site where you can read a screenshot of an article written about the “Afraid” letter. Date: August 17, 1977. Not sure which newspaper (clipping is cut off.) www.goldenstatekiller.com/afraid.jpgNote what the sheriff’s spokesman says in the article, ---- The information, which Miller indicated could only be known by someone familiar with details of the case that are generally not known to the public, "gives no clue to the identity of the suspect. We assumed the letter writer knows the person he or she was writing about." ----- So the possibility they thought it could be his wife was considered. Or, if you think Sac Sheriff wrote it, as alluded to in previous posts by Nick in this thread, then the “he or she” was a ruse to make JJD think his wife was on to him (JJD would know he didn’t write it, so must have been SH.) I searched for a mention of the word “Afraid" in e-book versions of Sudden Terror, Hunting a Psychopath, and I’ll Be Gone In The Dark, and didn’t find any that referred to the “Afraid” letter. Does that mean it wasn’t considered important in the case - or, at least, some decades after when the books were written?

But he did come back for the 10/1/77 attack in Rancho Cordova, EAR #24 - and several others, and only left the Sac area again for good(?) after the Maggiore murders 2/4/78. One thing to note is that December 1977 up to February/Maggiore, there were a ton of phones calls to earlier victims and authorities, plus the “Excitement’s Crave” letter. So the “in a panic” in August (which certainly may have been), might have changed to boldness after he committed a few more “successful” attacks in the Sac area between October and December 1977.

You may be right, that she had an idea, but on the other hand, I’m thinking of SH as a serious law-school grind, whose own career was extremely important to her. It might even have been convenient for her law school study time that JJD was often out of the house. We’d all like her to speak out about what she knows, but it’s her call. I only expect her to cooperate with authorities, and I’m guessing she has done that. But she is a lawyer, and knows how to be evasive. I’m also guessing LE hasn’t even asked her for info on any JJD possibles that weren’t already known to them - that would be most interesting to us.

So what I mean is he must have felt safe enough to come back. I also believe he was activate in Orangevale area of Sacramento County in around 1982-1983 time period and even stalked in Citrus Heights again as well in that same time period.

I also believe LE never got many straight answers because they wanted to use her a victim and did not want to push too hard,.LE may have needed her to prove their case so they treated her lightly. Then once JJD pled they lost interest in her completely and they never reached back out to her and she was not going to self incriminate. I don't think JJD was the world's greatest actor either and his wife knew something was going on. She also would have been like everyone in the area at the time worried that the East area Rapist was out there committing crimes. Everyone knew about the attacks, there is so much to uncover but it will never happen or maybe a granddaughter will do a tell all after both her grand parents have passed.
