n December 1977, letters were sent to the editor of the Sacramento Bee, the Sacramento mayor's office and the KVIE 6 TV station titled "Excitement's Crave" written in poem form by an individual claiming to be the East Area Rapist.
'Excitement's Crave'
All those mortal's surviving birth
Upon facing maturity,
Take inventory of their worth
To prevailing society.
Choosing values becomes a task;
Oneself must seek satisfaction.
The selected route will unmask
Character when plans take action.
Accepting some work to perform
At fixed pay, but promise for more,
Is a recognized social norm,
As is decorum, seeking lore.
Achieving while others lifting
Should be cause for deserving fame.
Leisure tempts excitement seeking,
What's right and expected seems tame.
"Jessie James" has been seen by all,
And "Son of Sam" has an author.
Others now feel temptations call.
Sacramento should make an offer.
To make a movie of my life
That will pay for my planned exile.
Just now I' d like to add the wife
Of a Mafia lord to my file.
Your East Area Rapist
And deserving pest.

I don't think so either. EAR was being very careful about not getting caught and writing letters to the cops just doesn't seem like something he would do. Plus it just seems a little too Zodiac like. My guess is it was a prank letter by some idiot that thought he was being funny.

It wouldn't have been his first written communication, most likely: - Sept. 11, 1975 (Snelling murder): at around lunch hour the day of the Snelling Murder, someone wrote, "Beth, I'll get the rest." on a dusty truck side mirror at the Mt. Whitney High School where Beth Snelling attended. It hadn't been in the papers yet, though perhaps the high school students were made aware. I think that it just about had to be JJD. Visalia PD still has either the mirror or a photo of it, not sure, in evidence. - May 16, 1977 (Haskell Ave. incident): here's the entry from the 12-26-75 map that describes, a prowler, most likely EAR, who was disrupted by a a the homeowner, who called the police, which caused a close call for the prowler with Sac Sheriff, but was not caught. The next day he left a straight edged message (not handwritten), one word per page, of a religious tract on the homeowners porch the next day, "ALLMOST HAD ME NEXT TIME YOU DIE." Criminology has an interview with that man in 2018 (pre-arrest). You can hear him describe the entire incident of him chasing the ski-masked prowler over the fence and he was just few feet from catching him, as well as the describing the written note - it starts around 22:30 in Criminology Ep. 17, "Roots in Visalia?" A 27 yr old man looked up from watching TV to see a man looking in his kitchen window. SSO arrived and chased the subject to the nearby substation, but lost him. When the homeowner arrived home for lunch the next day, he found a religious pamphlet with the message "ALLMOST HAD ME NEXT TIME YOU DIE" --------- - The period of November 1977 through January 1978 was a period of quite a bit of communications potentially from EAR, including calls to victims where the caller spoke, and the phone calls to Sac Sheriff and Sac City PD. The three receipients of "Excitements Crave" got it on 12/11/77. There were also some bathroom graffiti found in a few places where the writer was claiming to be EAR. I will only believe he wrote that poem when he himself states that he wrote the poem. In the meantime it just doesn’t fit. The poem is clearly influenced by the writings of Ellen White, Deangelo didn’t even want to write his own essays in college, and there is no indication of later writing interests.
