"In February 1978, The Maggiorre's were murdered in a neighborhood in the early evening, but lets go back to when they were alive and first started on their walk. A Sheriff's Deputy working [night] Patrol that same night had a conversation with Brian and Katie, as the Officer exited his marked Patrol car and entered his own home. They were said to have engaged in small talk. This is thought to be the last person to to speak to the two before being murdered. The Deputy's name is Fred Mason, the shooting occurred just minutes later while we can assume the Officer was still inside his home."

An Officer was that close to an occurring double homicide is ridiculous and no wonder they don't bring it up. This is important information that should be discussed.

This is something new to me. Would not doubt it. This neighborhood as then and now is kind of strange. Low income Section 8 apartments galore among custom built homes. Bigger lots and a pool in every other backyard. The upper middle class of Rancho at that time. Google maps will show. Also a lot of empty lots that were once ghetto apartments. In the 1980’s, many Cambodian Refugees settled in the area and quickly formed gangs. Area become known as “Rancho Cambodia” for a while until those apartments were leveled after incorporating in 2003.
So a Patrol Deputy lived there in early 78? The name Fred Mason sounds familiar? Possible son of Judge Rothwell Mason?
I would bet JJD parked his car at the old 24 hour Denny’s just blocks away or made his way across the river into the Del Dayo neighborhood of Carmichael? I don’t know if that foot bridge was there in 1978?
