In the Sacramento area he was known as the East Area Rapist, and was linked to additional attacks. He was later known for his southern California crimes as the Original Night Stalker. He has not been convicted and is only a suspect.

I am not sure if everyone knew of the misidentification in 2017 or not. This is an excerpt from a Sky News article.
It was revealed that another 73-year-old man living in a nursing home was misidentified in 2017 as the potential Golden State killer.
Court documents showed investigators convinced a judge to order the Oregon pensioner to provide a DNA sample after finding out from a different ancestry website that he had the same rare genetic marker as the killer.
His daughter, an amateur genealogist, helped investigators, as her father was in poor health.
However, detectives then determined that none of her relatives were viable suspects and turned to another DNA website where they managed to track DeAngelo down.

JJD worked for the Crane Service in Auburn and the nature of the crane would mean in my opinion it would be used in Downtown Sacramento for building construction. It appears to me he remembered the Downtown area because he saw a target-rich environment being Downtown and that would be the drive to locate victims and follow them home.

Forget all that, they picked him up right after my phone call 😹 Wonder if the three officers in the cell was related to the late preparations (if the person on the phone was giving you a true picture of what was going on). Last time he had only two guards in the cage with him - today it was three. Or is it something else going on behind the scenes that increased the security? Anyway, thanks for taking action - sounds like you rattled their cage, so to speak.

I've seen an interview with the woman, I think, but I may not have comprehended the implications at the time - if that last sentence is correct in saying, "they turned to another DNA website to track Deangelo down." I was thinking the Oregon man was the second-to-last of the last two suspects from their GedMatch genealogical tree. Does anyone know if that is correct, they used more than one DNA website in their search for Deangelo? And if so, did they have a completely wrong tree of suspects from the other DNA websites. That doesn't make sense, they'd just combine the info from both trees, I'd think. Anyway, do you have the link so I can read the whole article? I did a cursory search but didn't find anything.

This is taken from Goodday Sac and is just for a quick reference.
Born in Bath, New York, DeAngelo went to Folsom High School and got his GED in 1964.
He went on to Sacramento State, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
According to an “Exeter Sun” article from 1973, DeAngelo was a police officer in Exeter near Visalia and a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam.
He later joined the Auburn Police Department from 1976 until his termination in 1979, after DeAngelo was charged with shoplifting dog repellant and a hammer from a Citrus Heights drug store.
And for the last 27 years, he’s worked as a mechanic at a Save Mart Distribution Center in Roseville.
In 1960, JJD Sr. was living on Olson Drive in Rancho Cordova.
In 1961, JJD Sr. was living on Portsmouth Drive in Rancho Cordova.
In 1962, JJD Sr. was living on Abington Way in Rancho Cordova.
JJD attended Folsom High in 1961 to 1963, but never graduated. He got his GED in 1964:
