I have read accounts where co-workers referred to JJD as crazy Joe. I find that ridiculous and convenient for fellow LE officers to suddenly say JJD acted different or unique or even unusual during the times as a cop. They were all fooled and it would sting if it happened to me under my very nose and that seems much more likely.
The early days of JJD in LE are important to me for many reasons and the truth being arranged by those around him in LE to make it seem as if they knew there was something wrong with him and they alone saw it. There is the Chief's account when he was JJD's Sgt and he noticed JJD standing rather close to a citizen on a contact comes to mind. The Sgt stated he though he was not behaving in a safe manner when making a LE stop on an individual and he spoke to him afterward. This is something that happens to every cop it is an opinion of what is too close for officer safety etc and nothing that leads to JJD not being right or showing anything other than new cop behavior. The Chief still told the media the story as if it was a foretelling sign of something but it was the only thing he could even think of in regards to JJD prior to the shoplifting of course,

I agree that if JJD behaved in any way that got negative attention he would have been more likely to become a suspect in crimes, not just EAR series. The people that come out and say how strange he acted or how he was angry yet never called LE seem to come out of the woodpile after a suspect is arrested.
The fact is JJD was a compatibilized individual that through the separation of lives was able to fool everyone around him. Even when he gets caught shoplifting the Chief never even suspects him of any other crime because JJD was a master of deception. JJD was at least 3 different people as far as I can see first Joe the family man secondly the East Area Rapist and thirdly a small community cop that seemed like a dream for Auburn since he was of higher education and had been successful at Exeter PD and brought with him investigational experiences as the burglary Investigator.

The early reports from Auburn after his capture seemed to say he was a regular cop but with each additional interview the story changed , in particular the changes in the story around the timing and events around JJD visiting his home.

I believe the first interviews when they stated JJD was a normal non-superstar cop who just came to work and did his job at the average level were the truth. There was a reason no one ever dropped a dime on him to LE because of his everyday actions that never supported anything even close to him being close to a serial rapist.
