Just a side note relative to his picture posted on this blog. He had that spread of freckles across his cheek and nose which is common for red head or auburn toned people. I have several like in my immediate family and I have always noted how this changes with the seasons. These types do look much younger when their face is partially covered. My nephew is 33 and wearing his motorcycle helmet, he looks like a teenager.
This might explain why so many victims or others thought he was so much younger in the 76-79 era in Sacramento. Seasonally, I believe he fluctuated from being light red (like the Sierra College Owl picture) to Auburn hair like his Exeter PD picture. Not only was he a Chameleon in his personality and Criminal proclivity, he was also a Chameleon in his physical characteristics such as hair color and weight fluctuations.

He’d have been fifteen years old — just stating the obvious.

When I went through, the P.O.S.T. Required hours back then was 640 hours. However, caveat one could be sworn and working after about 1\3 the hours. My time was 20 hours a week and I could be employed also. JJD most likely worked as an officer while training. Just guessing though. His wife graduated from Sac State is in 76 and I don’t know her actual time there because she was a transfer student. It would be a good guess that he returned to the Sacramento area on days off if his newly married did not live with him. Also, to avoid confusion the academy may have been off site from Sequoia College like most are. Example: CHP grads still get 15 semester units from American River College even though they never step foot on campus. Same for Sacramento Sheriff and Sac PD. Sorry if I drift to far from the question. Given what you've written, dougguard, 640 hours divided by 20 hours per week = 32 weeks which would be two 16-week semesters - which you probably knew already, but I didn't. It make perfect sense as junior college semesters are 16 weeks, I'm pretty sure (though the 400 hours total quoted in the arrest warrant does really square up with semester boundaries.) So now we want to know exactly which two semesters he attended - just to have more whereabouts info (though he could have "commuted" to various crimes.) Was it before the VR supposedly started in 1974 (some say earlier), or during? I suppose if we knew when his 32-week stint as an intern with Roseville ended would be helpful. I have a just gained old guy from Roseville PD that I will be reaching out to checking any memories he might have and anyone else he may know regarding the internship at Roseville PD.

He was definitely active as just a prowler in late 1978 in the Ambassador Drive area. Especially due to the fact of The American River Parkway providing such easy access to the homes. They were hot prowler situations with one case where he fled because he could not locate the male in the house. This is the case I was personally familiar with. Evidently, he saw the couple drive into the driveway, enter the house and he waited. When he plied his way through the garage and made his way to the master bedroom, he found only the female. Prior to that, he removed the rods on the sliding glass door rails to aid in a quick escape. The male half had been sleeping on the living room couch and the sudden change of temperature woke him up. He rolled over to the back of the couch and was completely missed by the intruder. Both bathroom doors were open, hall closets ransacked yet the intruder totally missed the young man. You see this couple were just friends and she was house sitting for her parents who insisted she have help. The only way the EAR knew they were there was by following them that very night. Not finding them both in the same bed confused him and he fled out the sliding door. I am positive this was the EAR because of his alternative escape method and his expertise with locks.
This also demonstrates he was an opportunistic predator by either waiting or following potential victims. Victims such as the Harrington’s who most likely were spotted at Ralph’s Market and followed to their deaths.

100 % He was the Cordova Cat Burglar Nick. I don’t know how far back you can go? 1963-64 is a good place to start. Remember this! He was committing just regular burglaries at the same time as killing such as his crimes in Visalia. Think about the two plus years he spent at Sac State paralleled with the Cordova Cat series. Let’s say 71-72 as an open time frame. The two women I know who were not raped but a victim of a “hot prowler” on Ambassador Drive in 70-71. He was actually in her bedroom while her parents slept. Another victim lived on Danbury Way. She was 15 in 72 and her father chased the Burglar out of the house. Her father then accused her of having her boyfriend in the house only to later learn the 17-year old was out of town. The Cordova Cat Burglar of course disappeared when JJD started the night-time Police Academy at Sequoia College. The issue with Sequoia College is if JJD was already on the payroll of Exeter PD or was hired after graduating? This was a night school Academy of four nights a week, 7 to 10 pm and all day Saturday. Still we do not know if he was committing crimes during that time or if that time was counted as on the payroll. JJD having a Criminal Justice Degree plus a Navy Veteran with intern experience was more than likely paid to go to the academy and employed at the same time. In private. I will cite my Rancho Cordova, Folsom Sources. They are: *A former teacher at Cordova High. *The owner of a Cordova Security Company who provided security at Cordova Lanes Bowling and Cordova Drive In. *Tech Sergeant from Mather who was Karate Master and Cordova Meadows Resident who taught some victims. *Retired Sheriffs Captain(Chief of Detectives) who then was Private Detective and critic of that current investigation, *Retired Sacramento Police Captain (1977) The above are strictly individuals not connected to law enforcement at that time or academia but just residents who lived or worked in RC during this time with special insights. The Ambassador Drive connection is also interesting to me and I posted on the CHP Officer thread. The Ambassador Drive area is very close to the American River parkway bike trail and the only thing separating them was an orchard. The EAR task force obviously believed this area was important to JJD since the burrowed trail cameras were deployed in and around this same area. The bike trail also connected the Paseo Drive and surrounding area (Rancho Ground zero area) and could have been accessed through Cordova Park ( now named Hagan) the were also brand new homes being built in the River trails area at the end of Ambassador Drive.

The time frame would not fit with Norcal Rapist but there are some very clear similar MO traits in this guy and Norcal.

We have a good idea he was prowling during his high school years, and it's not just pure speculation. Remember the Man In the Window episode 5, "Bonnie and Joe" where "Judy" from JJD's Rancho Cordova surrogate family tells about a prowler with flashlight who came to her bedroom window in the middle of the night (just like he did years later with Bonnie in 1971.) Judy now suspects this was JJD. The episode doesn't say what year the incident happened, but it seems like it could have been between 1959 and 1964 from what we know. The interview with Judy in that podcast episode begins around 6:20 and the prowler incident begins around 11:15 (in the iTunes version, anyway.) EDIT: murderinc, I see you cover this in your link - sorry, didn't read it all before posting.

The dead dog incident on your site where Sgt James Feusi responded is interesting because I met Jim as I called him years ago after he had retired and had talked about crimes of those sort. Jim lived in Loomis and was a great guy he rose up the ranks and yet people still seemed to like him.

The things the CAT was doing during this series are what nightmares are made of. The standing over victims while they sleep the searching of the house and most of all the fact he would look through draws in the same bedroom as the victims slept. The activity got the attention of Sac Sheriff who created the ADEPT Team. If the team was already being developed which seems likely it was still being used to combat the CAT in Rancho Cordova.

murderinc, on another discussion board relating to a different question, discovered that JJD started his Roseville PD internship on June 19, 1972. Given the second half of the year starts around July 1 (26 weeks), that would have meant ~28 weeks of his internship happened in 1972, with around 4 weeks happening in January 1973. Just stating this for the record. Not sure if it's possible he started his COS training at the end of January or sooner.
