The family gave me permission to use the victim's name but I choose not to do so on the board. The victim's name is Patricia (she passed away in December) and the incident occurred in 1974 in Rancho Cordova in a home every near the Rancho cluster (I have the exact location) it was mid-morning and she was doing the families laundry. The washer and dryer were in the garage as it is in most of those style of homes there was a bad door that leads to the backyard with a window. Patricia was not home alone her young son 6 at the time was inside the home while she was in the garage. She looked through the window of the garage door and saw a man standing at the door holding a firearm in his hand the door was locked but it was a flimsy twist lock and she knew it would not hold so she ran inside the home to grab her own firearm. She was in a complete panic as she entered the house and grabbed the .22 caliber revolver as she ran back toward the garage to confront the gun-wielding man who she believed would harm her and her son. The man had begun kicking at the wooden garage door repeatedly and the frame had given way by the time she got back to the garage. The one thing she feared would happen had indeed happened the man with the gun was inside the garage and they met face to face as she brought her revolver up to point at the man he must have put his own gun away because both of his hands reached out and grabbed the barrel of Patricia's gun she pulled back as he pulled the gun upwards. The family stated Patricia had never been this afraid before or after this moment the struggle over the gun seemed to last for minutes in Patricia's mind it was most likely seconds time seems to slow down in traumatic events. Patricia told her family she willed herself the extra strength she needed to retain the gun and save her son she said the man was so strong and she nearly lost her grip several times but she knew it would certain death in her mind. She told the family she looked directly into the man's eyes and "he was extremely *ed off hate seemed to come from his eyes that she dares to defy his will" those were the words she told the family. The tugging match over the firearm was finally won by Patrica herself as he gave one final tug freeing the man's grip on the barrel one hand at a time. The man realized the would-be victim had gained the upper hand and he was now at the mercy of her as she took two steps back nearly falling from pulling so violently on the grip of the revolver. The man turned and started to run from the open outside garage door he had moments ago kicked open and ran for his life as Patricia pulled the trigger on the .22 caliber revolver he passed through the opening just as the hammer of the pistol struck the case of the shell igniting the charge and sending the bullet flying toward her assailant. Something to be noted here is the family was told by Patrica she fired two rounds at the man the report I have stated one round being fired I will take the family's side on this one. Patrica fired twice and she was shooting to kill the man when she was asked if she was trying to scare him the answer was always a definite "no I wanted to kill him he was going to do the same to me and my son." She called the Sheriff's Department and reported the incident immediately. The Sheriff's Deputies arrived very fast and were in the area searching for the man within minutes of the shooting. Patricia did not know if she had hit the man but there was no blood or other evidence to support the bullets had reached their mark and what a shame that was in my opinion. The neighborhood was searched after a perimeter was set up to no avail and the man had gotten away. The very interesting part of this story is the man was not wearing a mask but he was wearing gloves. Patricia had got a great look at this man even looking into his cold eyes even during the struggle. The responding deputies took the report and were given what they called a great description of the suspect. In the original report, Patrica was described by the deputy writing the report as a very attractive woman and believed the man's purpose was to sexually assault her. I relayed this information to the family and they said Ken Clark had told them the same thing recently when called them and she would have to be pleased being called attractive as they all laughed. The family remembers Patricia as a great sprite and a strong woman who stood up to all challenges in her life including this man.
