I have posted on a thread regarding this gap and my theories are he returned to Northern California and was engaged in prowling activities (prowling and burglaries) in and around the Orangevale area of attack #19 on May 5, 1977. There is a series that are very EAR-like in appearance that occurred in neighbourhoods in Orangevale during the 5-year break in 1981-1986. There were reports taken by the Sheriff's Department (North Patrol Division) that have details of the types of break-ins and prowler activities in Orangevale. I believe he returned to his roots of what he truly enjoyed the prowling and hunting of victims. There was also a couple of incidents in the same time period where the Sheriff's Deputies told the public while searching a neighbourhood at night "to go inside they are looking for the East Area Rapist" one of these were in the same Orangevale community as the break-ins and prowling and one in the Citrus Heights neighborhood off of Antelope Road. The Deputies could have been just saying that to get the public to go inside but I believe it was a sign LE also believed EAR might be back and when you combine the reports with that it has more merit than if it were single incidents. I am still working the Orangevale series to see just how many things happened in that time anframe.
JENN: I know for sure that there was no 5 year gap because Deangelo was at my window in 1983. I did not know that it was him at that time but I know it now because of the MO. My house backed up to a big open field (Roseville Road) and when I jumped out of bed and spotted him at my screen and screamed, he FLEW over that fence. I only recently found out that victim #25 was only one street away. Sac Sheriff came out and talked to us but did nothing. I was completely unaware of the EAR because I had recently moved to California.

Hi jenn, I’m very glad to find out about this site. Nick is my favorite poster on this subject and am shocked to find out that he was banned at the site that I had read his comments on — I read every one at least once.
I believe that the EAR never stopped being a creep. There is one of murderinc’s pages that is full of stuff from the time period that you refer to. It is full of professional sounding burglaries that happened in Placer and El Dorado counties which mostly featured firearms and vcr’s being stolen that I agree may have been him. Also, the page has details of the murder of Haley Wing which seems a lot like the PG&E murders.
I do have experience with the EAR’s career in Rancho Cordova in the ‘70’s as I grew up on Ambassador Drive, attended Mitchell jr High School(located near attack #43) and believe I had encountered him a few times.

Steelbike, I agree with you that Nick's contributions to the old board were invaluable. Several good posters were unfairly banned on that board by "Dickmond" (borrowed from mf73). No doubt that you had encounters with jjd while living in Rancho Cordova. So many people did.

I grew up on Gold Run Avenue. I've often wondered if JJD ever revisited my neighborhood in the early 80s.

In the late 70s and into the early 80s, my mother would occasionally find screens removed from the bedroom windows in our home. Quite disturbing to think about since JJD hit our street.

It would be comforting to know that a lot of this stuff was one guy or crew of guys who were connected instead of it seeming, as it did at the time, that every third dude was a house entering, burgaling freak (though, there were a lot of them).

A little strange for you, I'm guessing. Did you know the victims? Side note: goldenstatekillertrial.com is calling it "Golden Run Ave", so I sent a correction to them.

My parents didn't know the victims personally, but we know what house it was. My mother did talk to several neighbors about the attack after it happened. She said there were cops all over our street that morning. I was just a baby at the time. There were lots of strange things going on in our neighborhood back then. I believe with all my heart JJD was in our backyard as well. After the attack my uncle came over and put extra locks and bolts on our doors and some bars on the windows.

I only recently found out that victim #25 was only one street away. Sac Sheriff came out and talked to us but did nothing. I was completely unaware of the EAR because I had recently moved to California. This premise was always believable, but moreso than ever after we began discovering new details: he and Sharon purchased the Citrus Heights home in early 80, and that places him right on top of the targeted zones--and since that requirement is satisfied, it in turn satisfies questions of motive and of opportunity. He was a cat burglar and a rapist and a murderer, but the nucleus of it all is that warped fantasy world of his--as much as he enjoyed terrorizing his victims physically and psychologically, I've recently come to the conclusion that he simply liked having the power to observe his victims without their awareness, to go through their personal effects without their knowledge, and to do whatever he wanted to them and their property without their ability to counterstrike. More than voyeurism, he loved having the power to play God. Of course, "god" dropped the ball in a big way in Goleta--on more than one occasion--and had to chill for five years while licking his wounds. It probably didn't help his easily bruised ego that a Frenchman "cocoa-butted" him in a parking lot for acting like a horse's ass. mf73

MagnumForce73: " It probably didn't help his easily bruised ego that a Frenchman "cocoa-butted" him in a parking lot for acting like a horse's ass." You got that right!!!! I interviewed the off duty Sac Sheriff's deputy who was working at Brown's Hardware Store when that incident occurred. He still remembers it well. He didn't speak too kindly of jjd! Maybe we'll hear a bit more about that soon.
