There is evidence to support how much time JJD actually spent in backyards in bushes on roofs. There is evidence he would hide on roofs even when patrol units were cruising the streets looking for him. We know he used bushes and trees in front yards to move about based on Visalia Police as they observed him as the Ransacker. JJD only got better at his movements through the neighborhoods as he prowled for victims. The roof top tactic was not useful for him when the CHP loaned out use of the helicopter but that was after he had made the move to Contra Costa County. There is also evidence he may have parked his vehicle inside garages of homes for sale and may have even slept in the car waiting until the morning commute would start and blend in heading home to Auburn. Waller, the Norcal rapist also used this tactic years later. I saw in the shout out box someone wrote about JJD's use of garages and it remaindered me.

This is the stuff I want to know. I want to know how he did his crimes and avoided being stopped by law enforcement all that time.

The EAR attacks #1 and #3 are a good example of how JJd's tactics were used. The gentleman who lived on El Reye Court had been having problems with someone opening his side gate repeatedly. We know it was JJD entering the gentleman's backyard in order to gain access to the victims homes on Paseo Drive. The El Reye court resident had found his gate open so often he nailed it shut only to find it forced opened the next day. The gentleman even heard noises more than a few times while JJD was in his backyard. JJD appears to enter the neighborhood backyards just after dark and yet his attacks do not come until after 4:00 am this means he is spending a huge amount of time in the victim's backyards. There is also evidence JJD would use the backyards to travel the neighborhoods rather than using the street side. This explains why LE was missing him and he was of course known for opening gates to aid in his escape should the need arise.

I wanted to talk about some of the techniques JJD used to disable outdoor phone lines. We all remember in the #1 attack how the birdbath was damaged when it was believed the offender used it to stand on and cut the outside phone line or something along those lines. There is the debate JJD was trying to make it look less professional or at least a newish offender-type activity. I have spoken to someone who was working as a Deputy assigned to patrol in the 1970s and 1980s and he believed at that time whenever EAR attempted to or succeeded in disabling the phone lines from the outside of the home he would throw the garden hose from the yard over the phone line and pull it down. Sometimes the phone line would break from being pulled down with the hose other times it would stretch enough and would be low enough for a cutting tool to be used to sever the line. In simple terms, you take the garden hose that is already in the yard and throw it over the line and pull it down. The line breaks or it will stretch down to ground level and a cutting tool would finish the job. Most of the time the line breaks. The phones were not always disturbed on every attack and some even being disabled from inside the home but it is interesting to hear this information.

See this is the kind of content I want to read!!! I never thought of using the hose but every house has a hose in it.

But I can also say I never checked the hose for marks or I never saw the hose out of place or in a place where I suspected it was used to pull down lines.

There was another tactic used by JJD when he would perform his pre-attack burglaries some times he would take the spare key that most people have hanging around on a hook in their homes. The taking of a key allowed him to enter the home as he pleased when he chose to attack the victims. This was used a few times by JJD adding to his mystic of coming and going without being heard or seen.

One tactic used by JJD was to enter the home and set it up for later by unlocking a window in a young child's room or an extra bedroom. Sometimes he would combine two tactics such as setting the house up with the window trick and then enter the home in the early evening and do the lay in wait tactic. We know from many examples of people coming home and seeing a man inside their home through the window and this in JJD laying and waiting for the family to return home. The man would also get into the home and then spend his time going through the homeowner's possessions while he waited. There is also compelling evidence of him being inside the home for hours while the victims were going about evening activities while he waited for them to go to sleep.
We know he spent many hours in the backyards and he could wait just as well indoors and I am certain adding to his excitement. We know the excitement level is what was driving him and any time he could push it further he would.

We know from the HBO episode 6 of "I'll Be Gone In The Dark" that nephew Wes Ryland woke up in the middle of the night to someone who told him to go back to sleep. He also told about a figure being outside on the first floor roof overhang in the middle of the night, outside his bedroom window (I can't remember if it was that same Ep. 6 where he said that. If so, I seem to remember the show treated both incidents like one incident.) Anyway, EAR was already known to have been on a roof in an attack (was it just one, or were there more?) Nick, you may have already commented on this long ago, but how much license-plate checking of EAR neighborhood vehicles do you think he did - and how easy was it for him to do that inconspicuously?

After all that I have gathered over the years, I have come to the conclusion JJD was an Adrenaline junkie” the definition is a term used to describe a person who feels a compulsion to take part in exciting, dangerous, or intense activities. JJD engaged in risky behavior in and around puberty setting the stage as this need for excitement fused with a sexual component. He needs to raise the bar each time but is still be able to return to a portion of his life before he was first killed. This was the reason LE did not connect all of the different series of crimes to a single person. I know a lot of people with the same drive both male and female but most would never act on the fantasy because they are missing the incidents that JJD had in a sexual manner. JJD had to be a prolific peeper and sexual burglar there is no doubt and I see evidence of this in reports in areas he lived in.

I interviewed a sex offender (rapist) who talked about the "tingling" feeling he got when he was stalking/hunting a victim. This is what JJD has and he also would have to deal with the thrill of being gone, risk-seeking individuals can experience a post-rush crash that yields feelings of depression or inadequacy. This can necessitate taking bigger and more frequent risks—much like a person’s tolerance to other activities or substances increases with addiction.

We need to try to understand what these types of offenders mean by the tingle they get when committing crimes. Its something sent by the brain and is a rush for them as they do the unthinkable.

Do you think it goes beyond adrenaline (and any other lesser known hormones boosted doing something dangerous?)

Do you think it goes beyond adrenaline (and any other lesser known hormones boosted doing something dangerous?) They way it has been told to me by more than one offender it has to be more than adrenaline because they could get that fix in other ways. I believe there is more to it when there is a sexual component involved. In the JJD case imagine the drive that consumed his daily life and how he seemed to never sleep. JJD was able to work fulltime in LE and yet seemed to be prowling in both day and night that is a huge drive at work here. I'm not sure if science can explain all of the reasons for that tingle that offenders get.
