The biggest tactic JJD used was fear. JJD loved to get the reaction of fear from his victims and the power he had over them that can not be disputed. JJD also loved the media coverage that documented the fear the community at large had from his attacks. I also think that power went to his head and when the victims did not act out in fear at his presents he was enraged and killed them. The ONS series victims did not know they were being targeted by the East Area Rapist and they fought back that in turn enraged him causing him to lose control and control is what he needed to satisfy his sexual desires. He may have even been in disbelief when the victims did fight back and how dare they not coward at my presence. The media aided him during the EAR series of crimes because the public was being told to fear him. He wanted the reaction of fear and without it, the mind movie he had been creating all those years would not allow him to achieve erections and ruined the attack for him. The failed attacks caused him more and more anger to build up when in the past an attack would satisfy him for a short period of time.

JJD had a habit of scrunching up his face making his eyes smaller and protruding his nose outward it can be seen in photos. By doing this very thing the shape and look of his face change in a dramatic way. I believe the times when he was seen by neighbors prowling he was doing this very face sometimes it was described as a mean face. JJD weight also bounced up and down and combined with the face distortion it aided in making it seem those that had seen his face was not looking at the same person. JJD had a distinctive way of walking most said it was a gait for lack of a better term. I agree he had a certain way of walking but I call it more of a side shuffle with a very stiff back type of walk. This walk was noted after he was captured by those that knew him prior to this event.

He was not the weirdo that some have now claimed after his capture he was a blending-in guy and he loved doing dangerous things. He had friends and was not suspected by anyone he encountered at work or home and everywhere in between, that's why he was never on a single suspect list. People are saying things now after the fact but the truth is he was a great actor and he still is and will be until he dies. JJD's ability to not stir any suspicion from those who knew him proves he was not a psychopath because he knew how to act "normal" and unlike other offenders, he did not need to fake a caring personality he had mastered it when he was quite young and never had to fake it to make it. JJD is a sociopath and he does what he needs to satisfy himself and damn the rest of the world but also has the acting chops to pull off 72 years of faking the people in his world into believing he was a good guy.

JJD knew that in order to avoid being captured he would have to play this game of life in the long term. That would include having a wife and kids and a nice home. I think he thought this all through at a young age when he was just a peeper in Rancho Cordova in the 1950s. JJD learned to be a great sociopath and how to manipulate everyone around him during his Mills Jr High School days. He learned he had to keep his grades up to keep attention away from him his parents and teachers but he did not want to work hard but just hard enough to be that B average student. He also did not want to be a stand out in school because that would cause ridicule from his peers and he wanted to be the guy that does exciting things. He wanted to be the risk-taker but not too much just enough again he did not want to work that hard on anything in his life he wanted to be average because it caused him the least hassles in life. JJD learned to blend in and one other thing I think was important to him is being the good guy. I know that sounds strange knowing what he did over the years but it was important to him to be thought of as a good guy. He struggled with being a good guy. Even when killed someone it was their fault in his twisted mind he was defending himself after all. I also think he really had to twist the kills in his own mind in order for him to still think he was a good guy. He would have had an internal conflict that would make him break out into the crying that some victims reported because only during the attacks could be his true self and let that conflict out while never allowing that loss of control in his home /work life.

There was another tactic that has not really been spoken about at least from LE. During his prowling daytime and possibly some evening pre-attack burglaries JJD would locate a spare key and would take it. many of the victims even noticed the key was missing but did not report it or they misplaced it until after an attack. JJD did the spare key play a few times that we know of I suspect there were more than we believed which explains how he seemed to be able to enter homes so quietly. JJD was a burglary Detective for three years he knew human behaviors and where to look for extra keys.

I seen that too he closes his eyes slightly like he's outside on a sunny day or he can't see very well. My aunt does that eye scrunching thing when she can't read something.

On page 215 of Shelby's book (HAP) he mentioned a homeowner around Christmas of 1977 locating a plastic bag in the bushes under her window. The plastic bag contained a flashlight and a pair of gloves. The fact he stated the flashlight was not described to me means he read that in a report or was told directly. This is not the only reference that I have seen in inter-office memos regarding citizens locating bags with flashlights and gloves in the landscaping around their homes. This is, of course, sloppy policing, especially at a time when the local sheriffs were asking for the public's help in this case.
This is a clear tactic JJD used it explains his evidence awareness from being the Police. He would have the rape kit nearby and never be caught with the items on his person. The rape kit placement might also be part of a bigger escape plan when things go wrong. I firmly believe JJD had a backup plan to a backup plan and that is why he was never identified as a suspect.
I also believe the times that people have said they had seen JJD engaged in heavy thought sort of spacing out as one had said when interviewed were when he was engaging in his sick sexual fantasy.
There are a few known sex offenders who have admitted to many hours of thought and fantasy before they put anything into action. Many said they would spend hours alone in sick sexually deviate-driven fantasy worlds. This is why EAR attacks were like broken records he was saying the same things he had been rehearsing over and over. Once he reached a peak with a particular act say for instants taking it up a notch with attacks on couples.
JJD was always a risk taker but careful not to draw too much attention to himself.

The man on the roof listening at the bathroom vent pipes was a tactic JJD was believed to use. He would know if he couldn't hear voices when the occupants were preparing for bedtime. There was a time when no Police helicopters were flying through the night. When he moved his attacks to the bay area a CHP helicopter from Southern California had to be burrowed to help in the search.

I betcha he spent a bunch of time on the roofs waiting for victims to fall asleep. There was not much in the way of air support in those days and the back side of a house's roof could provide cover from Law Enforcement cars on the street. Patrol cars spotlight the fronts of houses but nothing for the back unless you are on foot in the backyards.

Now that we know JJD rode Motorcycles all of his life, I am certain he rode a motorcycle to escape some of his attack locations. People who hear car engines could easily mistake it for a motorcycle. The only bike at that time with a distinctive sound was a Harley-Davidson and other brands could be mistaken for sports cars and the like. A Motorcycle could be placed in the backyard of an empty house for sale behind the fence. The LE officers were looking for parked cars on the street, no one had reported him leaving a scene on a motorcycle. The motorcycle could also be placed in the backyard of a house, with the gate left open to aid in a quick getaway.
