It’s too crazy to be believed which often supports the theory that it isn’t true. Others have proposed he was able to do this because he was drugged. Surely such a state would have exposed him to a high level of risk. I seriously doubt he drugged.

I still don't know how he had time for all of the prowlings he did it's crazy. Because he was driven on by his sexual drive much like a drug addict he was a slave to his addiction.

One of the biggest tactics used by JJD was his ability to move through the neighborhood and the fact he seemed to spend so much time hidden in the backyards of homes. We know he would enter backyards near or at sundown this allowed him to be "in position" and I think LE was not aware of this. The x-ray units were working on night shifts while pursuing him. JJD was already in those yards much earlier than LE thought.

The EAR attacks #1 and #3 are a good example of how JJd's tactics were used. The gentleman who lived on El Reye Court had been having problems with someone opening his side gate repeatedly. We know it was JJD entering the gentleman's backyard in order to gain access to the victims homes on Paseo Drive. The El Reye court resident had found his gate open so often he nailed it shut only to find it forced opened the next day. The gentleman even heard noises more than a few times while JJD was in his backyard. JJD appears to enter the neighborhood backyards just after dark and yet his attacks do not come until after 4:00 am this means he is spending a huge amount of time in the victim's backyards. There is also evidence JJD would use the backyards to travel the neighborhoods rather than using the street side. This explains why LE was missing him and he was of course known for opening gates to aid in his escape should the need arise. I believe you mean Del Rey Ct, rather than El Reye Ct - just in case people want to look it up on the map. Del Rey Ct. is off Las Casas Way, to the west of Paseo Drive in Rancho Cordova.

JJD was already in those yards much earlier than LE thought. You'd probably need to discuss how he avoided the barking of the neighborhood dogs when considering the above. That's a good point but in fact there were lots of barking dogs JJD also would avoid large dogs or more accurately adult large breed dogs. The not so rare times when LE got close to JJD while prowling the neighborhood dogs were used in some make shift warning system when combined with the sounds of fence jumping. I have experienced this very thing on prowling suspect calls when I worked patrol you can heard suspect movement but at times in the dark finding them without air support or a canine is very difficult. One thing that happens is neighborhood dogs hear each other barking and start barking themselves not necessarily because of an intruder but because they hear the other dogs. Another factor outside dogs so often people stop hearing that live there or they call their dogs inside without really knowing what the dogs were barking at. There is the most important part of this tactic is JJD was prolific at prowling in both daytime and night, JJD learned where the dogs were just like how he would prowl the victim's home and their neighbors. JJD also learned the value of dog repellant Mace or OS gas) a dog only needs one time of being sprayed perhaps from the other side of a fence through the gaps in the boards. The dog repellant also stopped the tracking dogs from being as effective the dogs don't want to exhale it more than once. I had an insider once tell me and let me say firstly I have no way to prove or disprove it that Patrol officers stated in one of the close calls for JJD the smell of Mace was detected in the ivy but it was dismissed at that time.

There was another tactic related to the above that I believe JJD used were "safe yards" where there were no dogs and even some that were vacant for being sold. The "safe yards" would also be near the "open fields" with an escape vehicle would be parked. There is a great example of this on an attack (not sure what number it was in Citrus Heights) where JJD used the Country club (Golf Course) to flee the attack and get out of the perimeter in the event LE was able to set up after an attack. JJD used what I call the "two Courts over tactic" he would prowl and use the grid system of the neighborhood design to cross fence lines. The best way to explain this is when he would flee he would climb the first fence out of the victim's yard and put him in the backyard of a house on a Court street (Cul de sac) he would then cross the street and enter the across the street neighbors back and once again climbing that fence leading to an escape vehicle.

One other not so commonly known tactic JJD used was a motorcycle LE never let that fact out. I have seen a report with that information written by a patrol officer after a neighbor of a victim reported a motorcycle starting up around the time of the completion of an attack.
EAR had so many cop like tactics how I never saw it I will never understand.

Another interesting thing is how EAR was using several different type of tactics when most offenders of this type stick to the plan if it worked once they did it again and again. The reason is now explained by JJD attending a burglary Investigations school and training but at the time it allowed him to avoid detection. JJD was a great "restarter" meaning he was able to reset himself and take himself back to the start of a sexual predator's evolution. The example of course is he had already killed in the VR series but returned to prowling as the Rancho Cat and EAR. This was exactly why it took DNA to prove one man was responsible for all of the series of crimes.

I can see why someone would ask me what is the point of posting the tactics since JJD is in prison? I say because JJD is not the only one using these tactics and that applies more so for offenders who have still not been caught. We have to study how the beast thinks how he moves how he entered and leaves a target location because the beasts are many and no video camera is going to stop them they will adapt.

There is evidence to support how much time JJD actually spent in backyards in bushes on roofs. There is evidence he would hide on roofs even when patrol units were cruising the streets looking for him. We know he used bushes and trees in front yards to move about based on Visalia Police as they observed him as the Ransacker. JJD only got better at his movements through the neighborhoods as he prowled for victims. The roof top tactic was not useful for him when the CHP loaned out use of the helicopter but that was after he had made the move to Contra Costa County. There is also evidence he may have parked his vehicle inside garages of homes for sale and may have even slept in the car waiting until the morning commute would start and blend in heading home to Auburn. Waller, the Norcal rapist also used this tactic years later. I saw in the shout out box someone wrote about JJD's use of garages and it remaindered me. I might be way off base I am wrong alot. but didn't you say something about JJD using the bathroom plumbing pipe to listen to victims getting ready for bed?

I just noticed something (not really the correct thread) JJD's second child was born in Los Angles. It is out of order with the known family timeline. The Citrus Heights home was purchased in 1980 and Sharon was an attorney in 1982 and the second child was born in LA in 1986. Why were they in LA then?

I think we need a thread on the timeline. There is still the 10 year period of JJD's work history that is not nailed down. The period from the shoplifting incident on 7/79 to his start date at Savemart 8/89 is still in question. I have some EAR type activity in those periods but there has to be more.
